The Alpacas and Llamas

Learn about the lives and habits of Alpacas and Llamas

In their native land, alpacas are used for their wool for clothing, blankets, and carpets. Whereas the llamas have a coarse wool, and therefore are used to carry belongings through the mountain trails.

Alpacas are not only known for their wool, but also for their unique habits!

Alpacas and Llamas are small Camelids that originate from the Andes Mountains in South America

They developed differently from their cousins, the more known desert camels that have learned to thrive in harsh conditions. Unlike the camels, alpacas had to adapt to the cold and mountain terrain of the Andes. The alpacas are smaller animals that are covered in wool, and they are unable to store water and food like their cousins. The alpaca wool is a light and insulated material that is able to help maintain the bodies temperature.

The double hump camel has evolved in the wide open plains of Mongolia and Siberia

Camels have evolved their hump to store fat for the log journeys in the desert

Spitting

An argument between alpacas such as food, mating or status in the herd – is settled through spitting. A funny and unusual site to see! The alpaca do not spit on humans on purpose, but if you are around when they are fighting, you may be hit!

Reproduction

The female alpacas (and llamas) do not have a mating season. They can get pregnant  any time of the year. The female alpaca eggs only release through stimulation, therefore the full mating can lead to a particular long process, up to an hour! During the mating, it is common to see the other females "waiting in line" or trying to "steal" the males attention. The males also interrupt one another by spitting and screaming. The gestation period for the alpacas is 11.5 months, and they only give birth to one baby per pregnancy.

Alpaca Public Bathrooms

Alpacas have their own "public restroom" areas which is determined by the herd. These areas are also act like a "bulletin board" where they can learn what is going on by smell. Through these public bathrooms they are able to learn if an alpaca in the herd is pregnant, newborns, and if one is sick or weak.
